The city of Amsterdam has experimented with using algorithms to evaluate welfare applicants, and it attempted to implement this using fair and ethical AI. But when the Dutch city deployed its system in the real world, it still couldn’t remove biases. What happened? Why did Amsterdam fail? And more important, can this ever be done right?
